Cost Of Energy Rising

Have you noticed an increase in your power bill?

The same global economic influences that have caused prices to rise dramatically at the gas pump have pushed up the cost of other fuels in recent months. The increase -- particularly in the price of coal used in electricity generation -- has prompted Progress Energy Carolina's to seek an increase in the fuel component of the rates paid by the company's N.C. customers.

Here in Central Florida our power bills have increased. The increase, which Progress Energy says it needs to invest in power plants, cover rising costs and pay for the expansion of distribution equipment, would raise a typical monthly bill for 1,000 kilowatt hours from $122.79 last month to $135.79 in January 2010.

The increase in the base rate, which is just one component of a bill, would raise $500 million annually for the company.
