Wins with Schwenn: Florida Air National Guard

Florida Air National Guard
  • FLANG Fueling Building #29
  • FLANG Headquarters Building #2
  • FLANG Aircraft Hangar #1
  • FLANG Communications Building #5
  • FLANG Dining Hall # 4
Each of the jobs listed above is work that we have done directly for the FLANG. These are buildings that are spread out over the base and range in size from 3,000 square feet to 40,000 square feet. The description for the projects listed above stays typical. We are install conduit, wire, and box’s at exterior door locations in each of the buildings. There are multiple doors in each building. The installation at each door is for security. There is a keypad, motion sensor, and emergency exit button at each door. We are also installing the mag lock hardware on each door. We are installing a security panel inside each of the buildings data closets where all of the low voltage cabling is being terminated. Difficulty here is getting access into the multiple buildings. Some buildings are secured and access takes a lot of patience and coordination.
FLANG Server Rooms Power and Ductless split systems
For the job listed above Concise Inc. is our general contractor. Ernie Brewbaker is the G.C’s Project Manager. There is no real square footage to the project due to the fact that we are working in several buildings through out the property. Buildings range from a few hundred square feet to several thousand square feet. Description of work is for the electrical team to install new power for future server equipment, new grounding bars for proper grounding of existing and new equipment, new emergency lighting where none is existing, new lighting in server rooms where acoustical ceiling is being installed, and power for new ductless split system being installed. Challenge is coordination of manpower in out of town work. Coordination of equipment and materials in out of town work. Coordination of all manpower at secured base where you need security badges to be on site. Coordination of all work in multiple buildings through out the base.

FLANG Data Home-runs Building #5
For the job listed above Concise Inc. was our general contractor. Ernie Brewbaker was the G.C’s Project Manager. Square footage of building was in the range of 5,000 square feet. Description of work was for us to run conduit above ceiling and set junction box’s where necessary for the Data/Communications company so they could pull their low voltage cables in. They were installing Data and fiber outlets. Difficulty was that all cables had to be in conduit and the ceiling was full of existing duct work and conduits which made installation harder.

FLANG CTK/Building #22 Power and A/C
For the building listed above Concise Inc. was our general contractor and Ernie Brewbaker was the G.C’s Project Manager. Square footage of building was in range of 6,000 square feet. Description of work was for us to upgrade the existing electrical panel so that more circuits would be available. With the available circuits we installed new outlets for equipment and also provided power to a new 1 ton ductless split system which was also installed by Schwenn Services. When completed we installed a surge arrestor on the panel so as to protect it from any lighting strikes or power surges.

Thinking Ahead

Preparing your Unit for the Winter

Preparing both your office and home air conditioning for the winter will save you money and prevent system malfunctions: You can prepare your unit for the winter by (1) Making sure your thermostats are set to a comfortable temperature for winter temperatures, (2) Running the heater for a few minutes to burn off the year''s worth of accumulated dust, which is what causes homeowners, employees, and customers to think their building or home is on fire the first time the heat comes on and (3) making sure your system is "tuned up" for the winter by having the filter changed, drain line checked, and refrigerant levels checked to make sure their system keeps your family, customers, and employees comfortable throughout the winter.

Runner's Corner with Jeff

Goal: Marathon
Race along the way: Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon

Well, I am in week 12 of my Marathon training, 2 weeks ago I experienced what they mean by long runs! I set out to do my first 20 mile run. Like in the construction business you must always have a plan and you must always work your plan. So two days prior to my run I started eating right and putting the right food and fluids in me to sustain me through the torture.

For breakfast I had a bagel with jam, O.J., banana, and yogurt. For my mid morning snack I had (2) granola bars and a Gatorade. For lunch I had a large baked potato with salsa, a roll, chocolate milk and an oatmeal cookie. For my afternoon snack I had a cliff bar and Gatorade and for dinner chicken burrito, rice and salsa.

Needless to say I felt stuffed all day. However, by sticking to the food plan I was able to sustain the 20 mile run in 3 hours and 24 minutes. I will be running in 6 weeks and can tell you that what ever you set out to accomplish give your all, listen to you mind and body but most of all listen to your heart!

Sword Fish Tournament

Monsters of the Sea

The Schwenn Team headed to Jupiter, FL to fish in an all night sword fishing tournament. After the 2.5 hour trip tailoring the boat and getting all the bait and food for the moon light drift, we cracked the inlet at 6:30 pm for our 8:00 pm lines in start. The seas were calm and the night was going to be a beautiful night. We headed approximately 20 miles due east, as the call came over the radio for lines in at 8:00 pm so the Schwenn Team dropped our giant squid to the ocean god’s. We were fishing in approximately 2,200 ft of water during our drift north. It was very slow at first and then at 2:00 am we had our first fish on! The reel started to sing and the boat all of a sudden became chaos. 45 minutes later we had our first sword in the boat. All the high fives were going on and as we were cleaning up the mess, we had the second line go off, fish on! 30 minutes later we had boated our 2nd Sword. That fish was just under size so it had to be released however we were able to count it as a catch and release. By the time we had picked up after the 2nd fish it was time to head to the port since the weigh in was 6:00 am and we were 40 miles from the dock. All in all the Schwenn Team placed 1st in the catch and release category and got to put swordfish steak''s in the freezer.

Vax Design

Mission Accomplished

This project was an interior build out of approximate 30,000 sq ft. We totally gutted all of the mechanical duct systems and some air conditioning systems. We had a very tight construction schedule as they all seem to be anymore, that''s okay, it''s what we do at Schwenn Services. Our new scope of work consisted of installing (14) new Carrier rooftop package units, with all new duct-work, exhaust fans & grilles. This job was completed on time and under budget.

Holy Land

Project Complete

This project was a design build project that was awarded to Schwenn Services by T & G Constructors. The Mechanical Engineering firm was Milan Engineering. We hit the ground running on this project, the original open date was November 2011, so needless to say we had a construction schedule of 6 months. The project consisted of (2) 150 ton Carrier Air Cooled Chillers, (6) chill water air handlers and (9) smaller fan coil units & miles of chill water piping, ductwork, one hot water boiler and a lot of determination.

Needless to say if you drive by Holy Land and see this beautiful round coliseum you will see that it is complete. Special shout out to Reggie Pomerleau, Kamil Darbouze and all the team support from Schwenn employees, material suppliers & subcontractors. This job would not have been a success it was without them.

Last Shuttle Launch 2011

Just for Fun

Fun with Schwenn
On July 8, 2011, NASA successfully launched Atlantis into space for the last time, closing a 30 year run with the Space Shuttle program.  Courtney Wingo, Schwenn's Project Coordinator, was able to get passes to witness this true moment in history up close.

Courtney’s mom has worked for the space program for 28 years and her dad was out there during the Saturn, Mercury and Apollo Missions. Courtney also worked for NASA constructing Pad 37 for the Heavy Delta 4 Rocket.

A week before the launch Courtney received a call from her mom saying she had passes.  Knowing Jeffry (II) was an aspiring Space Cadette as a young boy, she gave him a vehicle pass and a badge to get where few people are allowed. He brought his wife Jenny and a long time friend, who was also an aspiring Space Cadette, as well as his wife Jennifer.

Faced with a 70% no-go, the Schwenn "Nerd Club" decided to go anyway.  With cameras, tripods, chairs and a cooler packed up we headed east to the greatest place on earth for the last time. It was cloudy and we kept listening to all the final preparations for the launch.  As we looked skyward to see what storms might affect us, we saw a patch of clear blue sky rolling towards the launch pad, our hopes were set to become reality.  The blue patch gave them just enough time to get Atlantis up in the sky one final time. Thousands of people held their breath and crossed their fingers.  Moments before lift off you could hear a pin drop in the grass, then as the count down started everyone went wild. Cameras were clicking and everyone was in awe of her beauty as she went up. It was a great launch and we will desperately miss the Space Program, they have given America great things through exploration.  The Fleet will be missed and we feel very honored to be able to go out as close as we could to wish it a final farewell.

Courtney quoted, “I couldn't imagine going out there with anyone else. The company was great, home made lunch by Jeffry was awesome.”

The Accelerated Reader Program was part of the intervention work spearheaded by Patty L. Harrelson, who took over as principal last fall when Rosemont faced the crisis of being three points from an “F” with some fifth-graders who couldn’t read.

“The stakes were high when we got involved and the statistics were alarming,” says Jeff Schwenneker, President of Schwenn Services.

According to a study from the Annie E. Casey Foundation, students who can’t read proficiently by third grade are four times more likely to drop out than their peers. The very lowest performers are six times more likely. Also, struggling charter schools could be forced to close if they earn a grade of “F” from the state for two years in a row.

“As a member of this community, we couldn’t allow this literacy trend to continue when major improvements were within reach,” says Schwenneker.

Harrelson said that positive feedback is incredible motivation for kids who rarely get it. Therefore, Schwenn enthusiastically got involved when called upon and donated incentives, including T-shirts that said “Rosemont Eagles Accelerated Reader 100-point club, considered “the most coveted prize” for participants.

The program’s success was recently featured by the Orlando Sentinel in an article headlined by “Orange School’s Turnaround Shows How it’s Done,” http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/opinion/views/os-mike-thomas-rosemont-test-scores-020110611,0,7660753.column?page=1

Schwenn is a strong advocate of encouraging companies in the Central Florida community to step up too, to donate time, services and funding. For example, companies can help Rosemont to increase their school letter grade by sponsoring a “Fuel My School” program. Rosemont is currently seeking partners for student uniforms and corporation-sponsored incentives for perfect attendance.

“We were impressed by how motivated these kids were to learn how to read,” says Schwenneker. “It was a privilege to sponsor this important program, as reading comprehension can make or break the course of anybody’s life.”
